Lake Toya Travel Guide

There is no entrance fee to enter the lake toya area or walk along the waterfront paths. You only pay for specific activities like cruise tickets, the cable car, museum visits, or hot spring baths.

Lake Toya is built around a wide, peaceful body of water with water sports, boat cruises, and an open skyline. Noboribetsu is packed into an alpine valley known for raw volcanic vents, thick sulfur smell, and deep-valley forest walks. Combining lake toya and noboribetsu over two days gives you both landscape styles.

A day trip of five to six hours lets you take the boat ride, ride the Mount Usu ropeway, and soak in a public footbath. Staying overnight allows you to catch the 20:45 fireworks from your hotel window and enjoy a proper kaiseki dinner without rushing back to Sapporo.

Advance reservations are not needed for individual travelers. Ferry boats depart every 30 minutes in peak season and every 60 minutes in colder months. You simply buy your ticket at the harbor pier terminal a few minutes before boarding.

Coin lockers are located inside the Toyako Onsen bus terminal and at the main sightseeing cruise ticket counter. Large lockers cost around 600 JPY and hold two standard roller suitcases.
